Pray for my friend Dave

Dave Doederlein is one of the best friends I’ve ever had. We were almost inseparable in high school, we were roommates in college, and he was the best man in my wedding.

Dave had a brain tumor removed last month, and everything went well. But a follow-up MRI revealed that there was still some of the tumor left, so he will have to have surgery again — probably next week. Dave has been married for almost 19 years and has four children.
I’m asking all of you who read my blog to Please pray for Dave. Ask God to completely heal him, and to give his family peace as he goes through this.

Prayer of Praise

This is a Prayer of Praise that I wrote a few years ago…..

O God, I praise you for your creation.


I thank you for the seasons you set in motion.

The cold, crisp beauty of winter;

The new beginning of spring;

The warm sunshine of summer;

The rugged splendor of fall.


Your awesome power is clearly seen

In the mighty oceans;

In the magnificent trees;

In the brilliant sunsets you paint in the sky;

In the billions of stars you have set in the heavens.


Your beautiful design is seen in all the creatures

that inhabit the earth.

The power and beauty of an Eagle;

The speed and grace of a Deer;

The incredible vastness of a Whale;

The fierceness and majesty of a Lion.


O God, your wisdom and power is seen in man –

the crown of your creation.

You have created us, male and female, in your image.

You have placed everything in creation under our feet.

We give you praise.


O mighty God, Creator and Sustainer of all things,

As I look at your glorious work, I am filled with awe.

I give you all glory, honor, praise and adoration.


Your creation bows before you, O God.

May you be praised forever.

Amen.

Using Our Imagination

My wife is currently reading a book on imaginative prayer (Seeing is Believing: Experience Jesus Through Imaginative Prayer by Greg Boyd). She loves it, and I’m planning to read it next.

We did some imaginative prayer exercises at our last Pastors of Excellence retreat, and it was a great blessing to me. Basically, it is using your imagination when you pray — thinking of Jesus being in the room with you, talking to Him, and listening to what He has to say to you. It might sound ‘New Age’ but its really not. God gave us our imagination, and if it can help you in prayer, you should use it.

I often use my imagination in worship. I will imagine being in the throne room of God, experiencing His goodness, majesty, power, holiness, etc. I imagine the 24 elders laying their crowns before the throne and being completely blown away by the presence of God. The times when I can really focus on that vision are times of powerful, convicting, life-changing worship. I’m still learning about imaginative prayer, but I plan to make it an important part of my prayer life.

I’ll have more to say after I read Boyd’s book.
