Thanks

Thanks to all of you who prayed, sent cards and e-mails, and posted comments here following my Grandma’s death.  It really means a lot to me.  The funeral went well — it was a wonderful celebration of a life well-lived.  It was great to see family and friends that I hadn’t seen in quite some time, and relive some memories of my Grandma.  It was also good to spend some quality time with my brother and sister.

My Grandma has passed away.  She was 102 years old, and had lived a good life.  She was born in England and came to the United States via Canada.  She became a U.S. Citizen and lived most of her life in the Detroit, Michigan area.  Everyone who knew her, loved her — she will be missed.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

The picture above is my Grandma on her 100th birthday, along with my sister, my brother, and me.

A Patrick Mead Sighting… and stuff

I had the opportunity to see preaching buddy and fellow blogger Patrick Mead last weekend. He was the speaker at a Men’s Retreat in Louisville, Ohio. He spoke on integrity, and as usual he was humorous, informative, and insightful.

We had our annual Glow Bowling last night. Each year, on the Sunday evening before MLK day, our church takes over a local bowling alley from 9:30 until midnight. We bowl, eat, play games, perform the YMCA song (at least some of us do), and just have a good time. Our fellowship ministry does a great job of putting the event together each year. My high score last night was 178 — not bad considering I hadn’t bowled since this time last year.

I was very disappointed to see Green Bay lose to the Giants last night. I really wanted to see Brett Favre in the Super Bowl again — he is one of my all-time favorite players. His hard work, great attitude and sportsmanship is such a contrast to Eli (“if I get drafted by San Diego, I’ll take my ball and go home”) Manning. I’ll be rooting hard for a Patriots win in the big game.

Critics…

I’ve read this quote from Rob Bell on a few other blogs, and I think it’s excellent. The world is expressing great need, but so many Christians are too busy criticizing, complaining and nitpicking to do anything about it. I’m getting tired of it.

Here’s the quote:

There are around a billion people in the world who don’t have clean drinking water, and 46 million Americans don’t have health care. That means if they get sick, they don’t have anywhere to go. Half of the world, 3 billion people, live on less than two American dollars a day, so the world is an emergency.

It’s on fire.

It’s drowning.

It’s an absolute crisis, and when followers of Jesus can think of nothing better to do with their time than to pick apart and shred to pieces the work of other followers of Jesus who are trying to do something about the world, that’s tragic, and I don’t owe those people anything. The world is desperately in need of people who will break themselves open and pour themselves out for the reconciliation of all things. When a Christian can find nothing better to do with their time in the face of this much pain and heartbreak, you start realizing that some Christians need to be saved.

Happy New Year!

It is a new year, and I’ve made some changes to my site. The biggest one is a change in hosting companies. I have switched to TheoBloggers, and I couldn’t be happier with them! I was not at all happy with my previous hosting company, and I know some other folks who use TheoBloggers, so I made the switch. A BIG THANKS to Brad Palmore from TheoBloggers who went above and beyond the call of duty to get my site up and running once I made the switch. If you’re looking for a company to host your personal web site, or your church’s site, I would would highly recommend TheoBloggers.

I hope to be more regular in my blogging this year. I appreciate those of you who stop by and read what I have to say. I’ll try to write something worth reading from time to time.

I hope you have a wonderful, happy, and blessed 2008!
