Memorial Day

This is a repost from last year…..

On Memorial Day I always think of my uncle Frank, who died a hero in World War II. Here’s an account of how he died from the site dedicated to his memory:

“For extraordinary heroism as a gunner aboard the USS SAN FRANCISCO during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands area on November 12 and 13, 1942. Courageously refusing to abandon his gun in the face of an onrushing Japanese torpedo plane, SLATER, with cool determination and utter disregard for his own personal safety, kept blazing away until the hostile craft plunged out of the sky in a flaming dive and crashed on his station. His grim perseverance and relentless devotion to duty in the face of certain death were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave up his life in the defense of his country. ”

His bravery and sacrifice earned him the Navy Cross. The Navy also named a ship after him — a Destroyer Escort, the U.S.S. Slater.

Comments Are Working Again!

Like many other bloggers, I recently had to move my site to a new host.  Everything went pretty smoothly, except for the comments.  But thanks to some technical assistance from Greg Kendall-Ball, they are working again.

I know all of you have been dying to comment on my recent posts, so begin typing!

Regarding Henry

Last night one of my favorite movies — Regarding Henry — was playing on one of the cable channels.  It is a movie that preaches the Gospel in a powerful way.  If you haven’t seen it, go to your local video store and rent it.  I give it my highest rating.

What other movies can you think of that preach the Gospel?

In Search of the Perfect Running Shoe

As a runner, I am constantly in search of the Perfect Running Shoe. It can be a frustrating search. I’ve come close to finding it a few times, but then the manufacturer always changes or discontinues that particular shoe. And I don’t have enough money to buy several pairs at once. So I keep searching.

I really like my current pair (Nike Air Zoom Hayward) shown above. I’ve only logged about 30 miles in them, but so far they are some of the best shoes I’ve had in quite some time. They are lightweight, flexible and have good cushioning. But they are getting hard to find, which tells me….. you guessed it….. Nike is going to discontinue (or change) them.

The search continues…..
