I bought a song off of iTunes last week and the lyrics really spoke to me. The song is “Things Like You” by Sanctus Real. These words hit me right between the eyes, and I think they speak loudly to our culture. I’ve included them below. See what you think.
Things Like You
by Sanctus Real
Loving things like you has wrecked my life, made me cry
Loving things like you has made me lose my mind
And I can’t figure out why I’ve been hanging on
To all these things I’ve tried to leave behind me for so long
And I think it’s time to find a better way to live my life
Than loving all those things that keep me wrapped so tight
Everyone wants everyone else’s eveything
Some time’s the more we have the less we really gain
I’m tired of life and all that money has to buy
Get out of my heart, out of my mind, leaving you behind
Loving things like you has left me bruised, black and blue
Loving things like you has made me so confused
And I can’t figure out what I’ve been waiting on
God I can’t be living for things I know are wrong
Now I think it’s time to write a better chapter in my life
Leaving all those things that keep me wrapped so tight
Why are we obsessed with possessions here on earth?
Go and take a look at the flowers and the birds
God is always taking care of nature’s every need
And how much more important in The Father’s eyes are we?
I said, how much more important in The Father’s eyes are we?
He sees everything

Jeff, you’ve been listening in on conversations between my wife and me lately, haven’t you? We just moved into a house we’ve been renovating, and brought our three (3!) LARGE storage units full of stuff into it, which we have been paying rent on for quite a while. When we got it all crammed into the house, we started going through it to get rid of it. We knew much of it was junk, but had not been able to get rid of it because, you know, there might be something in one of the boxes that’s a keepsake, or really worth something or whatever.
NOT!
Most of it is now gone, and what a cleansing that has been! What bothers me almost as much as the money wasted on storage is the time we have spent in moving, storing, sorting, moving again, and finally in giving it away. It’s been such a freeing feeling that now she wants to sell the house we just finished and move into a flat somewhere in Italy and forget owning ANYTHING! We probably won’t go that far, but the song’s lyrics do hit home for me.
On another note, give me a call at your convenience. We are going to be having an event in Columbus on May 8, and would love to see you there if you can make it. It’s on a Sunday evening, so I know that will be hard, but I’d like to give you the details, anyway.
take care
