Mike Cope has an interesting discussion going on at his blog regarding favorite movies. I am not a big movie fan — it has to be something really special (like the Lord of the Rings films) for me to take the time, trouble and expense to see a movie at the theater. Here is what I wrote concerning my favorite films:
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is high on my list, as is the first Rocky film (won the Oscar for Best Picture). Hoosiers, Field of Dreams and Miracle for sports films. Regarding Henry — a movie that preaches the gospel. A Christmas Story is one of my favorite holiday films.
One of the best scenes in a movie is the end of “Return of the Jedi.” Luke is trying to get his father — Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) off of the Death Star before it is destroyed. Luke says, “I’m going to save you!” Anakin says, “You already have.” Wow! Big time chills.
I would also have to put Caddyshack and Groundhog day in there, as well as Blazing Saddles and Monsters Inc. Also, there is The Passion of the Christ — but that would be in a different category, as it is not entertainment.
What are your favs? Put them in the comments section.

Gotta be Major Payne for funny Marine Corps stuff. Full Metal Jacket sometimes makes me laugh and at the same time gives me flashbacks to Parris Island. I love “What About Bob?” and the TV versions of “Trading Places” and “Coming to America.” Field of Dreams and For the Love of the Game are great as well as Bull Durham (despite the Pinko-Commie-Libs on the cast), Miracle and The Rookie are awesome sports movies. I still like both Blues Brothers movies for the music. My family and I are huge Disney fans so anything that comes from the Mouse House, we see (on DVD).
I forgot about the first Blues Brothers movie — that is definitely one of my favorites. And I loved What About Bob? And I agree with you about the TV versions of Trading Places and Coming to America.

Jeff, I am like you, only more so–I don’t go see movies. I looked at all the responses on Cope’s blog, and realized I had seen almost NONE of them. I must be the only person in the world who hasn’t seen Forrest Gump. I am semi-familiar with some of the kids’ movies, just because I have kids. Is this weird, or are there others out there like that? (It’s not that I don’t like movies, I just don’t have the time. I’m the same with television. I don’t think I’ve watched a full 30-minute t.v. program in 20 years, except for a couple of seasons when there were M*A*S*H re-runs on after the 10:00 news that we’d watch to wind down at night.) My question is: Where do people get the time to spend on movies, and is TV the biggest time robber ever invented?
I don’t mean to pour cold water on the discussion. Seriously, am I deprived, too busy, or what?
I saw a really cool movie once called “Megaforce”. I got free tickets from a place called “Sams Jams” and went with a buddy of mine.
I’m not sure I remember the movie Megaforce, but I do remember Sam’s Jams. I purchased several good records there for 25 cents a piece. I used to go there all the time with a buddy of mine.
O.K. I agree with T.V. being the biggest time robber of all time, but then I have no explanation for why going to the movies isn’t…maybe because it’s a time limited thing and eventually you have to get up and leave. I LOVE going to the theater to watch a good flick! The lights, the smell of buttered popcorn, the bubbles in a cold Pepsi, everything. A big round of applause goes to the guys who invented theater stadium seating, comfortable seats, THX sound, and that cool curtain that slowly rises at the beginning of each feature presentation. When my husband and I work out our budget every month, we base our entertainment/date amount on the price of movie tickets with snacks. (Most of the time) My favorites? Oh boy…recently – The Incredibles & Finding Neverland. I saw all of the LOTR twice in the theater (I’m friends with a manager) A movie has to be pretty bad for me NOT to be entertained, but that doesn’t mean I’m not discerning. I love the movies I can pull a message or lesson from, like The Count of Monte Cristo, Gladiator, Rudy, and The Shawshank Redemption. All of those are a little heavy, but I also enjoy chick flicks like Sense and Sensibility, Raising Helen, and Anne of Green Gables. My list could go on and on. I may have to blog about this one too…
